The History of Sporting Clays

Clay shooting originated in the early 1900s when British shooting schools began using golden targets to prepare for hunts. The material soon shifted to clay, and by 1925, the inaugural British Open took place in England, marking a steady rise in the sport’s popularity. It wasn’t until 1980 that Americans were introduced to sporting clays, thanks to an article by Bob Brister in Field & Stream magazine.

That same year saw the first American sporting clays competition held at Remington’s Lordship Gun Club in Connecticut. The sport’s appeal continued to spread throughout the U.S., leading to the establishment of the United States Sporting Clays Association (USSCA) in Houston, Texas, by 1985. During the decade, clay shooting captivated numerous American sports enthusiasts and was on its way to becoming a cherished national pastime.

By the late 1980s, further organization came with the creation of the National Sporting Clays Association (NSCA) by the National Skeet Shooting Association. This body set forth regulations and promoted clay shooting nationwide and globally. Presently, sporting clays is rapidly growing as a sport in America, drawing over three million participants annually across various age groups who engage in both competitive events like sporting clays competitions and recreational activities.
